Group theoretical analysis of symmetry breaking in two-dimensional quantum dots

چکیده
We present a group theoretical study of the symmetry-broken unrestricted Hartree-Fock orbitals and electron densities in the case of a two-dimensional N-electron single quantum dot ~with and without an external magnetic field!. The breaking of rotational symmetry results in canonical orbitals that ~1! are associated with the eigenvectors of a Hückel Hamiltonian having sites at the positions determined by the equilibrium molecular configuration of the classical N-electron problem and ~2! transform according to the irreducible representations of the point group specified by the discrete symmetries of this classical molecular configuration. Through restoration of the total-spin and rotational symmetries via post-Hartree-Fock projection techniques, we show that the point-group discrete symmetry of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock wave function underlies the appearance of magic angular momenta ~familiar from exact-diagonalization studies! in the excitation spectra of the quantum dot. Furthermore, this two-step symmetry-breaking and symmetry-restoration method accurately describes the energy spectra associated with the magic angular momenta.

Symmetry breaking and Wigner molecules in few-electron quantum dots
We discuss symmetry breaking in two-dimensional quantum dots resulting from strong interelectron repulsion relative to the zero-point kinetic energy associated with the confining potential. Such symmetry breaking leads to the emergence of crystalline arrangements of electrons in the dot. The so-called Wigner molecules form already at field-free conditions. The appearance of rotating Wigner mole...

Using a three-dimensional local spin-density functional method, we investigate the electronic structure of quasi two-dimensional ellipsoidal quantum dots with elliptical deformation. Changes in the electron addition energy spectra and spin polarization are investigated as a function of the number of electrons and the elliptical deformation on the lateral direction confinement potential, and com...
متن کاملSymmetry Breaking and Fine Structure Splitting in Zincblende Quantum Dots: Atomistic Simulations of LongRange Strain and Piezoelectric Field
Electrons and holes captured in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) are subject to symmetry breaking that cannot be represented in with continuum material representations. Atomistic calculations reveal symmetry lowering due to effects of strain and piezo-electric fields. These effects are fundamentally based on the crystal topology in the quantum dots. This work studies these two competing effect...
متن کاملChiral symmetry breaking in three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics in the presence of irrelevant interactions: A renormalization group study
Motivated by recent theoretical approaches to high temperature superconductivity, we study dynamical mass generation in three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics !QED3" in the presence of irrelevant four-fermion quartic terms. The problem is reformulated in terms of the renormalization group flows of certain four-fermion couplings and charge, and then studied in the limit of a large number of f...
متن کاملTime-Dependent Real-Space Renormalization Group Method
In this paper, using the tight-binding model, we extend the real-space renormalization group method to time-dependent Hamiltonians. We drive the time-dependent recursion relations for the renormalized tight-binding Hamiltonian by decimating selective sites of lattice iteratively. The formalism is then used for the calculation of the local density of electronic states for a one dimensional quant...
